Definition
Direct sourcing is when a company recruits contingent workers into its own branded talent pool instead of relying only on staffing agencies to find them. The workers are still usually employed and paid through a payrolling partner or the MSP program, but the company owns the relationship and the pool.
Direct sourcing moves the "find" step in-house; it does not remove the need to employ, pay and manage. A client builds a talent community, often of its own former employees, retirees, alumni contractors and referrals, and fills orders from it first. Someone still has to onboard, pay, insure and support those people, which is where agencies and payrolling providers come in.
How direct sourcing usually works
Why are companies adopting direct sourcing?
- Lower cost per hire. Payrolling a known worker usually costs less than a full agency markup.
- Faster rehiring. Former workers who performed well can be brought back quickly.
- Employer brand. Candidates join the company's own community, not an agency's.
What does direct sourcing mean for staffing agencies?
It takes the easiest fills away and leaves the hardest ones. The roles the pool covers tend to be the repeat, well-known ones. Agencies keep the hard-to-fill, high-volume and urgent orders. Some agencies respond by becoming the payrolling or back-office partner behind the pool; see payrolling.
| Agency sourcing | Direct sourcing | |
|---|---|---|
| Who finds the worker | The agency | The client, through its own pool |
| Who employs the worker | The agency | Usually a payrolling partner or the MSP program |
| Typical cost to the client | Full markup | Payrolling fee, usually lower |
| Best for | New skills, urgent volume, hard-to-fill roles | Repeat roles, returning workers |
How do agencies compete with direct sourcing?
- 1Win on what the pool cannot do
Speed on urgent orders, and hard-to-find skills.
- 2Offer to run the pool
Onboarding, payroll and compliance for workers the client found.
- 3Keep your own bench warm
A redeployable pool of your own Crew Members is the answer to "we have our own talent". See redeployment.
- 4Report fill performance
Show the program where you out-filled the pool.
Bottom line: direct sourcing takes the easy fills in-house. Agencies that stay valuable either fill what the pool cannot, or run the pool for the client.
How NextCrew helps agencies on both sides
- Your own talent pool. Search the existing pool by skill, certification, position, location and availability before recruiting anyone new.
- Private pools. Private jobs and groups let you invite only the Crew Members you choose.
- Payrolling support. Onboarding packages, timesheets and payroll export work the same for Crew Members the client found.
- Client favorites. A client's preferred list feeds the Client's Favorites filter when filling jobs.
